Appendix 1. ANTI-DISCRIMINATION POLICY/HARASSMENT POLICY

Latest version.
  • The City of Carencro is committed to providing and maintaining a safe, productive and wholesome working environment for all employees. In furtherance of that commitment, the following addendum is made to the Personnel Policies and Procedures for the City of Carencro. Its provisions are to be effective immediately and are to become a permanent addition to other written city policies:

The City of Carencro intends to provide a work environment which is pleasant, healthy, comfortable, productive, and free from intimidation, hostility or other offenses which might interfere with work performance. The city affords equal opportunity to all persons, without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, disability or any other protected class status. The policy applies to all aspects of employment and all personnel actions. All employees are required to support this philosophy, and to practice nondiscrimination in their relationships with other employees. Department heads and supervisors have specific responsibilities for practicing equal employment in all job-related decisions which affect current and prospective employees.

Discrimination or harassment of any kind—verbal, physical, visual—will not be tolerated. Abusing the dignity of anyone through disparate treatment, disparate impact, ethnic, sexist or racial slurs, suggestive remarks, physical advances or intimidation of whatever kind is unacceptable conduct which will not be permitted in this workplace. Any employee who feels that he/she has been the object of discrimination or harassment should report such conduct immediately to his/her department head or supervisor or any other member of city management with whom the employee feels comfortable. Violation of this policy will result in disciplinary action which may include suspension and/or termination.

    What is harassment?

Harassment can take many forms. It may be, but is not limited to: words, signs, jokes, pranks, intimidation, physical contact, or violence. It is not necessarily sexual in nature. It may include racial or religious comments, jokes or epithets or other abusive conduct.

Sexual harassment may include unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, other verbalizations or physical contact of a sexual nature when such conduct creates an intimidating environment, prevents an individual from effectively performing the duties of his/her position, or when such conduct is made a condition of employment or compensation, either implicitly or explicitly.

    Responsibility:

As a city employee, you share responsibility for keeping our work environment free of discrimination and harassment. If you become aware of an incident of discrimination or harassment, by witnessing the incident or being told of it, you should report it to the appropriate supervisor or any city official with whom you feel comfortable, without fear of retaliation of any kind.

    Reporting:

If you feel that you have been a victim of harassment, report the incident immediately to your first-line supervisor without fear of reprisal. If your problem involves your supervisor, you are encouraged to report your difficulty to any city official with whom you feel comfortable, including, but not limited to, the individuals named below. Appropriate and prompt investigative and disciplinary action will be taken with due regard for the privacy rights of everyone involved.
